Box Day!

The guy and I subscribe to a CSA-style fruit and veggie delivery. And box day is pretty much my favorite day of the week. Especially when I get to open the box. This week we got:

Carrots
Cucumbers
Sweet Onions
Black Grapes
Broccoli
New Potatoes
Plums
Cherries
Lacinato Kale
Lettuce
Zucchini
Tomatoes

Now, to manage to eat all these goodies before next week! But first, I'd better finish of the apricots, pea vines, lettuce and beets from last week's farmers market outing....

July 27, 2011

More leftovers, and homemade chocolate pudding. Hooray!

Breakfast
Bob’s 10-Grain Hot Cereal with brown sugar, cinnamon and cream (I love Vietnamese high oil cinnamon beyond all reason)

Lunch
Pita with leftover kebab meat and veggies and tzatziki sauce (yes, I had the same thing yesterday- it was worth eating again. And sadly, now it is all gone)
Glass of milk with sugar and vanilla (like chocolate milk, but less work)

Snack
Tonic water
Carrots (happy little early summer carrots from the farmers market)
Publish Post
Dinner
Leftover Quiche, still going strong
Salad- pea leaves and merlot lettuce with a fennel citrus salad that the Guy made last weekend (no idea what recipe he used. And yes, I just put a salad on top of a salad. That’s how we do things around here).
Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat beer (first time I’ve tried it. Very tasty).

Dessert
Chocolate pudding (recipe here. Although I just did mine on the stove. Easier than cleaning chocolate off the microwave).

July 26, 2011

Whee! Two whole days of records. With, wait for it...a recipe! And leftovers. We cooked a lot last weekend, what can I say?

Breakfast
Tea with milk and sugar
Nancy’s plain yogurt with a sliced apricot, almonds and honey

Lunch
Cherry tomatoes
Pita with leftover kebab meat and veggies and Alton Brown’s Tzatziki Sauce (admittedly more of an interpretation thereof, but quite tasty)

Snack
Banana Smoothie

1 frozen banana (I am obsessed with frozen bananas. It’s a little frightening)
1 T brown sugar
½ C plain yogurt
½ C milk
½ t almond extract (my latest food obsession- so tasty)
ice (you know how thick you want your smoothie- use that much ice)

Blend. Okay, so it’s not much of a recipe, and the measurements are more like guidelines than anything you’d actually use a measuring device for, but it is quite tasty. I promise.

Snack the Second
Pickle (not with the smoothie, that would be gross)

Dinner
Leftover pork burger with mustard on whole wheat bread (something along the lines of this recipe, but don’t use that much milk. Seriously. Doesn’t work. Especially if you’ve, say, subbed out two ounces of meat for two ounces of bacon like we did. Go ahead and do the same. I won’t tell.)
Steamed broccoli

Dessert
Apricot

July 25, 2011

So this, the inagural day of my very official food diary, consists mainly of...leftovers. I did warn you, didn’t I?

Breakfast
Cup of coffee with half and half (brewed crazy strong by the beloved Guy)
Nancy’s plain yogurt with frozen fruit (a lovely blend of blueberries, raspberries, and boysenberries), almonds and honey

Almonds and yogurt may be one of my favorite texture combinations ever. The yogurt totally changes the texture of the almonds, and it’s awesome.

Snack
Apricot, nice and ripe, from the farmer’s market

Lunch
Leftover Quiche- mystery filling ala the Guy (appears to contain cheddar cheese, bacon, and kale), crust according to Alton Brown
Cherry tomatoes
Glass of Milk

Snack
Tea (English breakfast, my favorite) with milk and sugar

Dinner
Salad, consisting of:
Leftover roast chicken a la Italian Easy (the best roast chicken recipe ever)
magically transformed with:

paprika
powdered chipotle pepper
cumin
butter

Cut up leftover chicken into cubes. Melt butter in skillet. Add spices in proportion to how much chicken you have. Add chicken. Sautee untill coated in spices and heated through. Serve on top of pea vines and lettuce with lime juice, olive oil, and cheese (which totally should have been cotija, but since what I had was a mozzarella cheese stick, that’s what I used. But seriously, go with the cotija.)

Beginnings

Hello hypothetical blog readers! I shall dub thee my HBRs. This little experiment in blogging exists for a few reasons, the most important of which is as a tool for me to remember how old my leftovers are. (I kid. A little. Well...let’s not talk about it, okay?) It is a food diary, recipe repository, and miscellaneous record of all things food. I am not on a diet, nor do I ascribe to any of the multitude of paleo/vegan/Atkins/whatever styles of eating. I like food and cooking. I eat a lot of leftovers. I eat out occasionally, and in a lot. My guy and I share the cooking (and the eating), and I’ll try to share his recipes as well as mine.

In a dream world, I might even make a bit of money with this thing (if wishes were horses, etc.). So we’re monetizing from day one here. Of course, dear HBRs, as long as the H remains in my very own TLA (that’s three letter acronym for the TLA illiterate), I’ll be doing this for my own random amusement. What do you say? Shall we start?
